Important Insurance Considerations When Assignees Leave Vacant Homes

Published: Jul 11, 2014

Most assignees don't realize their homes would be considered uninsurable under their standard homeowner's policy while they are on assignment, despite the insurance premium being paid. Insurers in most jurisdictions usually offer only limited coverage or, more frequently, no coverage at all for dwellings left unoccupied for more than 30 to 60 days due to the much greater risks and opportunities for claims.

This creates the potential for serious financial exposure and additional stress for the employee and employer.  Decisions about insuring a vacant home during an assignment can be challenging, as such policies are more complex and expensive than typical homeowner coverage.
