Embracing Sustainability in a Relocating World

As a socially responsible corporate citizen for over 37 years, NEI reviews every stage of the relocation process for opportunities to promote sustainability. It is ingrained into our core value to be Innovative and develop smart sustainable solutions to deliver quality customer service.

We have also been recognized as a leader for our initiatives. For example:

  • Awarded the Corporate Social Responsibility CSR 2020 Silver Rating from EcoVadis – a third-party company that specializes in rating CSR performance based on four major themes: environment, labor and human rights, ethics/fair business practices and sustainable procurement. NEI has consistently performed above the averages in each category of assessment.
  • Partake in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) on Climate Change  The CDP aims to make environmental reporting and risk management a business norm, driving disclosure, insight, and action towards a sustainable economy. In 2021, NEI scored a “C”, which is higher than the CDP Commercial and Consumer Group Services, North America, and Global averages. NEI is in the top third of companies who reached that level and scored equal to or better than average in six measurement categories!
  • The annual Electric Utility Industry Sustainable Supply Chain Alliance (EUISSCA) is an organization of utilities and suppliers working to advance sustainability best practices in utility supply chain activities and supplier networks. NEI consistently participates in this annual survey in support of our many clients in this business category.
  • NEI supports the successful non-profit Move for Hunger program to reduce food waste and fight hunger on a national level. NEI is proud to sponsor this organization in cooperation with many of our moving partners who pick-up unopened, non-perishable food items which families would normally be forced to discard when relocating to a new city. As part of the household goods move, our partners ensure that these items are brought to local food banks in the U.S. and Canada. Move for Hunger also encourages its participants to organize food drives and make financial donations to aid in the fight of reducing food insecurity.

NEI’s Green Team

Green Team members at NEI assume leadership roles to identify solutions that assure NEI’s contribution as an eco-friendly corporate neighbor in the communities we live, work and play. Innovative ideas come from employees, giving all at NEI an opportunity to contribute to our sustainability goals. A few examples include:

  • Using recycle and shred bins.
  • Recycling toner cartridges/computer equipment
  • Participating in World Clean Up Day, Adopt-a-Park and other environment volunteer opportunities.
  • Making modifications / renovations to our facilities to achieve energy efficiencies.
  • Using EnergyStar printers / appliances, eco-friendly products, and dispensers to reduce waste.
  • Repurposing items (kitchen equipment, carpet, filing cabinets, desks, art, window coverings, ceiling pads, lighting, computer hardware).
  • Programming outdoor sprinkler systems for the most efficient times of day.

Workflow Automation

NEI continues to lead the way toward a digitally efficient and nearly paperless organization. Some of the processes include:

  • Relocating Employee Initiations, Cost Estimates and Approval Processes – all digitally delivered.
  • Welcome Packets – automated assembly and distribution to relocating families based on policy guidelines.
  • Reporting tools and predictive analytics.
  • Electronic Scorecards, which are automatically shared with service partners.
  • Digital Signatures for internal and external needs.
  • Virtual Workforce collaboration tools.

Online Tools & Activities

  • NEI Cities Search Tool – Our online search tool is integrated with Google Places for transferees to virtually visit their destination and identify areas of interest before home finding.
  • NEI Let’s Go! This online self-move tool is designed to assist relocating employees who receive limited relocation support. The NEI Account Executive provides an initial overview of key considerations when relocating and directs them to the site which serves as a paperless tool, filled with valuable information to help employees manage their moves more productively. 
  • NEI GO Mobile® – NEI GO Mobile offers the same robust features and functions as our full featured Global Gateway website, only highly optimized for mobile devices so employees can manage relocation activities while on the go. This digital platform is designed to greatly reduce or eliminate the need for paper documents and expense submissions.
  • Remote Employees – NEI annually reduces its carbon footprint from a significant number of our employees working virtually and not commuting.

Local Community Support

  • NEI employees annually contribute more than 5,500 aggregated volunteer hours of time and energy for almost 250 organizations – including Rebuilding Together in Omaha, Habitat for Humanity, United Way, Goodwill, American Red Cross and Open Door Mission to name a few. Popular charitable activities among our employees include fundraising / collection efforts, home building, and mentoring.

Service Partners Share Our Eco-Friendly Commitment

Our excellent relationship with Home Sweet Home and its “Discard and Donate” program helps the environment and supports our green initiatives. For 2021’s first three quarters alone, the Discard and Donate program directly impacted NEI clients’ sustainability activities, including:

  • 423 trees saved.
  • 1,269 trees planted.
  • 20,297 gallons (76,832 liters) of fuel reduced.
  • 50,742 lbs. (23,016 kg) of cardboard / paper consumption avoided.
  • Over 1.2 million pounds (544,310 kg) of household goods shipment weight was eliminated!

Our efforts also include Greener Supply-Chain Management and partnering with sustainable service partners. Many household goods partners have implemented a formal environmental plan, including the use of engines built for greater fuel efficiency. Additionally, our service partners agree to the NEI Code of Conduct requirements and support sustainability through:

  • Eco-Crates for commonly shipped objects, such as flatscreen TVs, which can be used multiple times.
  • Electronic Invoicing to reduce paper usage.
  • SmartWay® (EPA) certifications, demonstrating a commitment to reducing transportation-related emissions and environmental risks while increasing global energy security.
